Police Explain Attempt to Arrest Tani Olohun in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has explained why their officers from Kwara State tried to arrest Abdulazeez Adegbola, also known as Tani Olohun, in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The police said the officers were in Ibadan on official duty to arrest Tani Olohun. This was based on a warrant issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court in Ilorin. The warrant was due to allegations related to conduct that could disturb public peace.

DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, shared this in a statement on Tuesday. The statement revealed that the warrant was issued after Tani Olohun did not meet the bail conditions that were given to him earlier. This led the court to order his arrest.

PUNCH Online reported that when the officers tried to arrest Tani Olohun, there was a scuffle with residents. This escalated until Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, intervened.

Videos on social media showed men who looked like police officers trying to take Tani Olohun away. One officer was seen showing his identity card to residents who questioned what was happening.

After the incident, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police told the officers to return to their base. He also advised the complainant to go to the right court in Ibadan since that is where the alleged offence took place.

The police statement said, “The Command wishes to clarify that the officers were acting pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, in connection with allegations bordering on conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. The warrant was reportedly issued following the failure of the said Tani Olohun to honour the conditions of bail earlier granted to him, thereby prompting the court to order his arrest.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, directed the officers to return back to their base. He also told the complainant to approach the appropriate court in Ibadan, being the alleged place where the offence was committed, in line with due process and the principles of territorial jurisdiction.

The Oyo State Police Command urges the public to remain calm and law-abiding. They also ask that people avoid actions that could disturb the peace or make the situation worse.
