Police nab 26-year-old suspect in Anambra nursing student's murder

The Anambra State Police have arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Ibekwe, over the murder of Miss Vivian Chilaka, a 23-year-old nursing student.

This sad event took place in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area on June 14, 2026. It raised a lot of concern among the public, with the landlord of the victim initially being suspected.

In a statement released on Saturday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police, said the suspect was arrested on September 4. This followed reliable information received by the police.

Ikenga explained that initial investigations showed the suspect climbed the fence with a ladder to enter the building. His aim was reportedly to sexually assault the victim.

After breaking into Vivian's house, he allegedly stabbed her with a knife, leading to her death.

The statement said, “The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old male suspect, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, in connection with the murder of Miss Vivian Chilaka, a 23-year-old nursing student, whose tragic death in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, on June 14, 2026, attracted widespread public concern.

“The suspect was arrested on September 4, 2026 following credible and actionable information received by the Command.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly gained access to the building by climbing the fence with the aid of a ladder, with the initial intention of sexually assaulting the victim.

“According to his statement to the police, a struggle subsequently ensued between him and the deceased, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, leading to her death.

“The suspect has also allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community. These claims are currently being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration by the Command.

“The Command further wishes to clarify that the landlord who was earlier suspected in connection with the incident has been exonerated following the ongoing investigation.

“The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard any earlier suspicion against him.

“The suspect remains in police custody as investigation continues, particularly into his alleged involvement in other related criminal incidents.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has praised the people of Alor for their cooperation, patience, and support during the investigation.

The CP especially thanked community members who provided timely and useful information that helped in making this significant breakthrough.

“The Commissioner reiterates that the Command will continue to pursue every credible lead in the investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.

“The Anambra State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in policing, and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes do not escape justice,” the statement concluded.
