The Katsina State Police have arrested a 20-year-old man, Adam Tama. He is accused of attacking his 19-year-old cousin with knives and firewood. He also robbed her of her mobile phones, cash, and other valuables in Katsina.
The police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, shared this information in a statement on Sunday. He said the attack happened on June 22 at around 3:23 PM. The victim, Fatima Lawal, reported the incident soon after at the Sabon Gari Police Division.
According to the police, Tama attacked Fatima, causing a deep cut on her right ear and leaving her with multiple injuries.
"The suspect brutally attacked the victim with knives and firewood, inflicting a deep cut on her right ear and various other degrees of injuries across her body," the statement noted.
Police say Tama tied Fatima with a rope and covered her mouth with a sponge to suffocate her. After thinking she was dead, he dragged her into a bathroom and fled with an iPhone 13 Pro Max, a Samsung A05 phone, a power bank, and ₦18,500 cash.
"The suspect brutally attacked the victim with knives and firewood, inflicting a deep cut on her right ear and various other degrees of injuries across her body. He then tied the victim with a rope and covered her mouth with a sponge in an attempt to suffocate her. Believing she was dead, the suspect dragged and dumped her body into the bathroom before fleeing the scene with the following items:
"One iPhone 13 Pro Max, valued at ₦750,000, one Samsung A05, valued at ₦185,000, one Power Bank, and a cash sum of ₦18,500 in newly minted ₦10 and 20 naira notes were also taken. After receiving the report, detectives were deployed to investigate the incident. The victim was taken to the nearest hospital for urgent medical care, where she was treated and later discharged.
Police quickly tracked down the suspect. During a search, they found him with the stolen iPhone 13 Pro Max and a school bag containing sandals and a long gown. He confessed to buying these with part of the robbery money. Police also recovered two blood-stained knives and the firewood used in the attack. During questioning, the suspect admitted to committing the crimes. He will face charges in court after the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP Ali Umar Fage, praised the victim for reporting the incident quickly. He also commended the police officers for their swift and professional response that led to the suspect's arrest. He assured the public that the police are dedicated to protecting lives and property in the state.
