Police in Anambra State have saved an unidentified middle-aged man. He was found unconscious and likely under the influence of hard drugs in Awka, the state capital.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer, shared the news on Facebook. The man was discovered by officers from B Division during a patrol on July 15, 2026. This happened around midday on Oby Okoli Avenue, near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Temporary Site in Awka.
The police reported that the man was lying unconscious by the roadside. There were no visible injuries or signs of violence.
"The victim was discovered by Police Operatives attached to B Division on a midday patrol on 15th July 2026 around Oby Okoli Avenue, UNIZIK Temporary Site, Awka. He was lying unconscious by the roadside with no visible signs of struggle or injuries suggestive of violence," the statement said.
The officers took him to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he is now getting treatment. The police also searched the man but found no identification or mobile phone that could help trace his identity or relatives.
"A search conducted on him did not reveal any means of identification or a mobile phone that could assist in tracing his identity or relatives," said the police.
Preliminary findings indicate that the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs, but investigations are still ongoing.
"Preliminary assessment suggests that the victim may have been under the influence of hard drugs. However, efforts are ongoing to identify the victim and notify his family members for further necessary action," the statement added.
The police noted that this incident shows the risks linked to drug abuse and addiction, especially among young people. They also reaffirmed their commitment to the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices. This campaign aims to fight drug abuse, cultism, and other criminal activities through awareness, public education, and working together with other groups.
