Police Search for Teacher After 12-Year-Old Student's Death in Anambra

The police in Anambra State are looking for a teacher who allegedly punished a 12-year-old student, which led to the boy's death in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area.

This was shared in a statement on Friday by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson.

Ikenga explained that the search began through the police’s Safe School Initiative Operations. This operation is led by ACP Harrison Oruruo, who oversees operations.

Ikenga said the police team is tasked with finding the teacher connected to this incident. They want to ensure anyone responsible faces the law.

He stated, “The team will, among others, commence a manhunt for a teacher that allegedly flogged a 12-year-old student resulting in the victim’s death at a school, in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of the State.”

The incident happened on the evening of July 16, 2026. Police officers from the Neni Division were alerted and quickly took the victim to a hospital.

Ikenga shared, “On receipt of the report in the evening of July 16, 2026, Police operatives attached to Neni Division responded promptly and rushed the victim to a Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.”

He added that the deceased's body has been taken to the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Ikenga mentioned that pictures of the victim were taken, showing visible injuries on various parts of his body.

The police spokesperson said that the investigation is ongoing and assured that steps are being taken to ensure the suspect is brought to justice.

“To this end, the Command has expressed deep concern over the tragic incident and assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the Command will conduct a thorough, diligent, and transparent investigation,” he stated.

He emphasized that the police are dedicated to protecting school children through the Safe School Initiative.

“The Command further reiterates its commitment to the protection of school children through the Safe School Initiative and urges members of the public with useful information that could aid the arrest of the suspect to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Command through its emergency line 07039194332,” the statement concluded.
