Political Shift: Ten APC Lawmakers May Join PDP in Niger State

There are signs that at least 10 lawmakers from the Niger State House of Assembly may switch from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) this week, sources close to the situation have told PREMIUM TIMES.

This potential move comes as political changes happen in the state. This follows the recent switch of former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Muhammad Nami, to the PDP.

Mr Nami, who wanted the Niger South senatorial ticket under the APC, was accepted as the PDP’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election on Saturday.

Sources familiar with the potential defections say talks between the lawmakers and PDP leaders have reached a critical point. They expect the lawmakers to make their official announcements after discussing with their supporters and political allies.

"Preparations are far advanced, and there is already a high level of understanding and agreement among the stakeholders," said one of the sources.

If confirmed, this shift could change the political scene in the Niger State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections. The news comes amid increased political activity in Niger State, with both the APC and PDP trying to build their support before the elections.

Recently, the PDP chose Mr Nami as its governorship candidate after other candidates reportedly withdrew in his support. The party believes his selection will help them take back the state from the APC.

But the PDP has also faced a setback in the state. Its former chairman, Tanko Beji, recently left for the APC, saying that the ruling party is the best way for him to help Niger State grow.
