Rivers State investigates forced virginity tests on schoolgirls
The Rivers State Ministry of Education is investigating claims of forced virginity tests on 16 female students, condemning the actions of those involved.

The Rivers State Ministry of Education is looking into claims that 16 female students from Government Comprehensive High School, Taabaa, in Khana Local Government Area, were chosen for forced virginity tests.
In a statement dated October 22, 2026, the ministry strongly condemned the incident, saying it involved members of a traditional institution in the area.
The statement, shared on Facebook, said people claiming to represent the institution came to the school, pretending to offer scholarships and exercise books. They allegedly selected the students for the tests under this pretense.
The selection reportedly happened on Thursday, September 17, 2026, and led to protests by students who objected to the tests.
The ministry described these claims as serious. They raised worries about the dignity, privacy, and rights of the schoolchildren.
"No individual, traditional institution, community group, or private organization has the right to force students into virginity testing or any other form of abuse.

"Educational help, like scholarships and exercise books, must be given openly and without conditions that threaten the safety, dignity, or rights of the students," the statement said.
The ministry has started an investigation to find out what really happened. They will take action against anyone involved, including referring the matter to the relevant authorities.
They also warned traditional institutions, community groups, and individuals against testing female students for virginity, whether directly or indirectly.
Additionally, the ministry told schools in the state to protect students from any degrading or invasive practices. This includes practices disguised as cultural traditions, scholarship programs, disciplinary actions, or community development efforts.
They assured the affected students and their parents that they are taking their concerns seriously. They emphasized that every student's safety, dignity, and rights must be respected.
