Sokoto State Gives N143 Million to Fire Victims

The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, on Wednesday kept his promise to help victims of fire outbreaks at the Sokoto old market and central motor park that happened in July.

A total of N143 million was shared among 76 traders and business owners who were verified as victims of these disasters. This money will help them rebuild and restart their businesses.

During a short ceremony for the financial support, the Chairman of the Investigation Committee, Gandi Muhammad, praised the affected traders for their patience and cooperation during the verification process.

He explained that the fund is not formal compensation for their losses. It is a kind gesture from the state government to help victims revive their damaged businesses. "The highest beneficiary received N25 million, while the amounts given to others varied based on the verified extent of their losses," Mr Muhammad, a lawyer, said. He also urged the beneficiaries to pray against future disasters.

Several beneficiaries thanked the governor on behalf of all victims. They praised Governor Aliyu for keeping his promise shortly after receiving the committee’s report. They pledged their ongoing support for his administration.

The fire disasters impacted both commercial areas in July 2026. They caused significant damage and disrupted economic activities in Sokoto.

At the old market, the fire affected key sections, including bicycle, motorcycle, clothing, and cosmetic stalls. It destroyed more than 50 shops and burned inventory, spare parts, and cash reserves.

At the Sokoto Central Motor Park, the fire ruined several makeshift structures, passenger stalls, and shops. This halted transportation and petty trading in the area.

Preliminary assessments by emergency management agencies estimated that the total property losses from both locations reached hundreds of millions of naira.

After the fires, Governor Aliyu set up a nine-member investigative committee to look into the causes, assess the total damage, and check claimants.

After a careful verification process, the committee confirmed that 76 out of 94 initial claims were legitimate.
