Ten people, including a child, died and six others were injured when a commercial bus crashed into a truck that was reversing on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Sunday night.
Punch Newspaper reported that the accident happened around 8:05 p.m. at Saapade Bridge. It involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) truck and a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number EKY 290 YM.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that nine adult males and one male child lost their lives in the crash. Four adult males and two adult females suffered injuries. Two male passengers were unharmed.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC said speeding, wrongful overtaking, and dangerous driving caused the crash. They noted that the truck driver caused the collision by trying to reverse on the highway.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, the truck driver reversed after missing his route. This left little space for the oncoming bus.
"The truck driver reversed on the highway after missing his direction, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, tried to pass through the limited space and crashed into the truck," Mr Odunsi said.
He mentioned that a total of 18 people were involved in the accident. This included 15 adult males, two adult females, and one male child.
"Sadly, 10 people died, which included nine adult males and one male child. Six people had injuries, while two adult males were unharmed," he added.
The FRSC rescue team took the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment. The bodies of those who died were taken to FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
Mr Odunsi said officers from the Nigeria Police Force at the Ishara Division have secured the crashed vehicles for further investigation.
He also stated that the accident scene was cleared to restore smooth traffic flow on the highway.
FRSC warns against reversing on highways
In response to the crash, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, called the incident avoidable. He urged drivers, especially truck operators and commercial drivers, to follow traffic rules strictly.
Mr Ogunjobi warned against reversing on highways, speeding, wrongful overtaking, and other risky driving habits. He noted that these violations lead to many deadly accidents on Nigerian roads.
He advised drivers who miss their routes to go to designated turning points instead of making dangerous moves that could put other road users at risk.
