MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd has advised people in Enugu to focus on electrical safety during the rainy season. This is to prevent electrocution, accidents, and damage to properties.
The company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, shared this advice on Monday in Enugu. This came after heavy rain, windstorms, and flooding affected many areas in the state.
Mr Ezeh encouraged residents to stay indoors when it rains or find safe places away from electrical infrastructure. This will help reduce their chances of facing dangerous electrical hazards.
“Customers and residents should remain indoors or seek safe shelter during rainfall,” he said.
He warned against taking cover under trees or standing near electricity poles and power lines during storms.
Heavy rain and strong winds can bring down trees and electricity poles. This can lead to snapped wires that create a risk of fatal electrocution.
Mr Ezeh also advised that people should not touch electrical appliances, switches, sockets, or fittings with wet hands. He explained that moisture increases the risk of electric shock.
He pointed out that electrical installations in homes and businesses should be well insulated. Regular maintenance is also important to prevent faults and reduce accidents.
He urged parents and guardians to keep their children away from electrical installations and other dangerous places during the rainy season.
“MainPower encourages them to unplug sensitive electrical appliances during severe thunderstorms to minimize the risk of lightning-induced power surges,” he said.
Mr Ezeh stressed the importance of reporting any emergencies. This includes fallen electricity poles, snapped wires, damaged transformers, or any unsafe electrical installations that need urgent attention.
“Customers and residents should call the company’s emergency line,” he said.
He added that customers can also reach out to the Quick Response Team through the Customer Call Centre for immediate help.
Mr Ezeh assured customers that MainPower is committed to protecting lives and providing safe and reliable electricity during the rainy season.
He asked customers to cooperate by following all electrical safety precautions. Reporting any faults or unsafe electrical installations quickly can help prevent avoidable tragedies.
