Eight people, including four children, died and 17 others were injured when a commercial bus crashed into a tricycle on the Funtua-Katsina highway in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State on Sunday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said early findings show that one vehicle was overtaking wrongly, which led to the crash.
The accident happened around 1:32 p.m. at Layin Kukah. This was confirmed by Shamsudeen Babajo, the Public Education Officer of the FRSC Katsina Sector Command.
Mr Babajo explained that the crash involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number 14B 92 TR and a Bajaj tricycle without a registration number.
According to the FRSC, 25 people were in the collision. This included 16 adult males, four adult females, two male children, and three female children.
Eight people died in the crash. This included two adult men, two adult women, one male child, and three female children. The other 17 victims suffered different injuries, including fractures and cuts.
“The injured victims were immediately taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for treatment,” the statement said.
The Corps confirmed that initial investigations suggest wrongful overtaking as the likely cause of the deadly crash. They also mentioned that they had not yet identified the drivers involved at the time of the report.
The FRSC has called on drivers to avoid risky overtaking and to follow traffic rules. They warned that reckless driving continues to take lives on Nigerian roads.
Road accidents are a big safety issue in Nigeria. Speeding, dangerous overtaking, and ignoring traffic rules are often pointed out by road safety officials as major causes of deadly accidents across the country.
