The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Wednesday that nobody planned to hit a girls’ school in Iran during the early stages of the Iran war in February.

At a press conference during the G7 meeting in France, Mr Trump stated that early findings did not show that the school was intentionally attacked.

"You’re talking about a long time ago, but nobody did that on purpose," he said.

"Mistakes are made, yeah, the war’s nasty. But I know it’s under investigation, and I could have a report for you tomorrow."

After the attack in February, the US president suggested that Iran might be responsible, pointing out that Tehran’s forces were known for poor accuracy in their strikes.

The strike on the first day of the conflict, on 28 February, killed more than 175 children and teachers, according to Iranian officials.

In March, Reuters reported that US military investigators thought American forces were likely behind the strike, but said the investigation was still ongoing.

US Central Command noted that the investigation is complicated because the school is near a base used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a cruise missile facility.

The attack drew strong international condemnation and raised concerns about civilian casualties in the conflict.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) called the bombing of the school a serious violation of international humanitarian law. The agency emphasized that schools are protected civilian places and should never be targeted in military actions. UNESCO urged for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible.
