The Ondo State Police Command has announced plans to charge two men, Olawale Sikiru and Agbelusi Ayomide, for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping. They aimed to collect ransom from Sikiru’s family.

The police claim that Sikiru faked his own kidnapping with Ayomide's help. They demanded N1 million from his relatives.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, shared this information in a statement on Saturday.

Jimoh said, “On July 5, 2026, one Mrs Iyabo of Oda Road, Akure, reported to the police that her 33-year-old son, Olawale Sikiru, of St. Luke Street, Akure, had allegedly been kidnapped while travelling to Igbara-Oke for work by unknown persons.”

After receiving the report, the police began a detailed investigation. They used intelligence assets and looked into the phone number that the suspects used to ask for the ransom of N1 million from the family.

The thorough investigation had positive results on July 7, 2026. Detectives arrested Olawale Sikiru, who was found to have planned his own kidnapping.

The police spokesperson noted that investigations showed the suspect set up the fake abduction. He managed to collect N50,000 as part of the ransom paid by his family for his supposed release.

Jimoh added, “Further investigation led to the arrest of one Agbelusi Ayomide, 23, who allegedly conspired with the suspect and harboured him in his residence while the fraudulent kidnapping plot was being executed.”

The police are still working to catch other members of the group believed to have taken part in this crime. The arrested suspects will be taken to court after the investigation is finished.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, urged the public not to engage in or support fake kidnappings or any criminal activity.

He said such actions waste important security resources, cause emotional and financial pain for families, and lead to serious legal consequences.
