The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the green light for six new full-time undergraduate programs and more postgraduate courses at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). This will start from the 2026/2027 academic session.

Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s Public Relations Officer, shared this news in a statement on Saturday in Benin.

She mentioned that the approval came after the NUC successfully assessed the proposed programs.

Ehanire said this development will boost UNIBEN’s status as a top institution for training skilled professionals.

Among the new undergraduate programs are Bachelor of Science degrees in Speech Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

These programs are part of the initiative by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, to train skilled workers to fill the gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The other approved undergraduate programs include Bachelor of Science degrees in International Relations, Intelligence and Security Studies, and a Bachelor of Education in Primary Education. There is also a Bachelor of Nursing Science.

The nursing science program will be offered together with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Additionally, the university’s Centre of Excellence in Space Science Technology and Application has received the nod to offer Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Remote Sensing and Aeronautics Engineering.

Ehanire noted that the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Edoba Omoregie, expressed gratitude to the NUC for the approval.

She added that the vice-chancellor emphasized the university’s dedication to being a leading center for training and development through various academic programs.

Omoregie stated that the university will keep enhancing its academic offerings to meet the needs of national development.
