Zenith Bank Plc has said it is looking into a case of unauthorized access to customer data. The bank assured that this breach does not include any financial information and has not affected its banking services or digital platforms.
In an email to customers on Wednesday, the bank explained that this incident is part of a larger global cyberattack impacting several international organizations across different sectors.
The bank stated that it quickly activated its response plans and stepped up its cybersecurity measures as soon as it discovered the issue.
“This incident is part of a broader, global cyber-attack targeting multiple international organisations across various sectors. Upon discovery, we promptly activated our incident response protocols, cybersecurity actions and remediation efforts,” the bank said.
The bank reassured its customers that its banking services and digital platforms are safe and fully operational.
As a safety measure, Zenith Bank urged customers to stay alert for possible phishing attempts and other types of scams.
“As a precaution, we encourage our customers to remain vigilant against phishing emails, text messages, or phone calls, and never to disclose their password, PIN, One-Time Password (OTP), or other security credentials to anyone,” the bank said.
The bank also emphasized its commitment to protecting customer information, aiming to keep customers’ trust in the bank.
This incident adds to the growing list of cybersecurity issues faced by Nigerian banks. Recently, some banks have halted their social media activities due to impersonation and other fraud cases.
Earlier in April, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) announced it was looking into reports of data breaches involving Sterling Bank, Remita, and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
