The Accord Party has rejected the support given to Bola Oyebamiji, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, by Chris Imumolen. Imumolen is the party's expelled former presidential candidate.
Imumolen, who claims to be the factional presidential candidate and Factional National Chairman of Accord, announced that the party has withdrawn its support for Governor Ademola Adeleke. He stated that Accord now backs Oyebamiji of the APC.
In a statement released on Thursday, Maxwell Mgbudem, the National Chairman of Accord, said that Imumolen's presence at the APC campaign rally in Osogbo, where he endorsed Oyebamiji, showed he was no longer part of Accord.
Accord called Imumolen a “political hireling and hustler” without any political base to sway the results of the governorship election happening on Saturday.
The party also rejected Imumolen's title as “factional chairman,” insisting there are no factions within Accord. "Imumolen's attendance at the APC rally in Osogbo, where he supported its candidate, clearly shows he is not a member of Accord and does not represent us in any way.
"His claim to be a ‘factional chairman’ is not just misleading; it shows his grand delusions, as there are no factions in our party. Imumolen does not have any electoral influence in Nigeria," Mgbudem added.
Accord expressed confidence that Governor Ademola Adeleke will win the upcoming election under its platform. The party emphasized that Osun State is a stronghold for Accord.
"Osun State is an Accord stronghold; the people support Governor Ademola Adeleke and will vote for the party on Saturday, August 15,” the statement said.
The party further accused the APC of resorting to violence, intimidation, and harassment due to fear of losing the election. Accord claimed the APC is using federal institutions like the police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to suppress the Osun government, its residents, and Accord members.
Accord called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain neutral and ensure a fair election. It also urged security agencies to act impartially and professionally.
The party appealed to the international community, including the European Union, African Union, ECOWAS, the United States, and the United Kingdom, to monitor the election and take action against anyone who compromises the process.
Accord expressed faith in winning, citing Adeleke’s accomplishments and leadership in the state.
"Let the Osun State governorship election set a new standard for how elections are conducted in Nigeria,” the party stated.
