From listening to the ideas of the Trump administration, you might think America is surrounded by enemies. They paint a picture of the United States as a country with a weak economy, vulnerable to those who want to take advantage of it. They claim the economy is in such bad shape that only Donald Trump can save it. They also talk about endless wars with no clear purpose. They say the nation's values are at risk from a mix of people at its borders.
But this dark image fits Russia better. Russia has changed from a powerful country during the Cold War to a smaller economy filled with nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union, which Russia is connected to, was kept in check by the global order after World War II. This order included the United Nations, the World Bank, and the IMF, created by the US to promote individual rights and limit the spread of socialist ideas.
If a weaker USSR was a good result of the post-World War II order, how did China escape this containment? It is not because the containment weakened. China shifted from being a communist state to a capitalist one. The changes that began with Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s led to the country joining the World Trade Organization in December 2001.
If America is not weaker now than it was in 1945, then what is it? It remains the top economic power in the world, even though its share of global trade has decreased recently. The US dollar takes up less space in global reserves than before, but it still gives the US what ValĂ©ry Giscard dâEstaing called an âexorbitant privilege.â Because of the dollar's strength, the US government can borrow money at lower costs than other countries.
America may not be weak, but it is obviously tired. The global institutions it built are also feeling worn out. Many experts have called for a redesign of international governance. This need comes from the ongoing changes in the world. The world has changed, not just due to different people or their interactions. Economic ties, lower birth rates in the West, and technology have all put pressure on economies worldwide.
In Europe, the result of the post-World War II order is seen in multicultural societies. Many native populations feel overwhelmed by immigrants whose values seem different. This has led to the rise of populist nationalist parties that challenge established parties, as Europe looks for solutions. In the US, similar political fractures are happening within the two main parties, especially the Republican Party.
Despite all these challenges, the world is working together more as the US steps back. It just needs to invest more in its commitments. This is how it should be. The US is still a leader in developing new technology. But it struggles to control access to its advanced designs. The changes in US policy create gaps that will take time to fill. Technology tends to benefit those who can use it best, so a world that relies more on itself than on the US may gain more from Americaâs tech advancements.
And what about the US? The YorĂčbĂĄ say that when a ram steps back, it is to gather strength. The Trump administration has harmed global institutions and the US itself. You could say that the US is more tired today because of Trumpâs actions. Its retreat will be harder, but it is both possible and necessary.
