US President Donald Trump has said his government is putting in place the "most crushing economic operation" on Iran. Analysts believe this shows Trump's frustration as his administration struggles in the Iran war.
In a post on Truth Social early Thursday, Trump said the sanctions will target "any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran."
The US has had strict economic sanctions on Iran for over 40 years. It is unclear how this new announcement will change anything.
Trump did not give details about what these new US sanctions would involve.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, dismissed Trump’s new threats in a post on X. He called it a "diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs."
He added that the "so-called ‘Economic D-Day’" would only lead to more defeat for Washington. "Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat, and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide," he said.
The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Ghalibaf, also claimed the US was looking for an "honourable exit" from the Middle East while trying to create a "new regional order."
Trump’s announcement came less than 24 hours after the UAE, a US ally, said it was stopping all trade and economic cooperation with Iran. The UAE accused Iran of launching ballistic missiles at them this week, which Iran denied, saying it could have been a false flag operation by the US or Israel.
Analysts believe the UAE’s embargo could deeply impact Iran, which depends a lot on its neighbor for key imports and access to financial markets.
The US war with Iran has now gone on for almost seven months.
On Monday, the Iran-US MoU, signed on June 17, expired. This marked the end of a 60-day deadline for both countries to finish the war and reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.
PREMIUM TIMES reported earlier that Trump demanded Tehran to "put up the white flag of surrender."
He also threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. "After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States," Trump said.
