The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ikeje Asogwa from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Enugu North Senatorial by-election held on Saturday.

Mr Asogwa received 162,360 votes. He beat his main opponent, Nestor Ezeme from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 9,299 votes.

INEC organized the by-election after the death of Okey Ezea, the senator who represented the district in the Senate.

Okey Ezea passed away in November 2025 and he was a member of the Labour Party.

Announcement

Christian Ezeibe, the Returning Officer for the by-election, announced the final results on Sunday.

Mr Ezeibe, a professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, confirmed that Mr Asogwa received the most votes and was declared the winner.

"Ikeje Asogwa, having satisfied the requirements of the law in this election, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected," he said.

The returning officer noted that there were 727,340 registered voters in the district, and 184,094 voters were accredited for the election.

According to the results, Okwudiri Ossai from the Nigeria Democratic Congress came third with 3,129 votes. Chika Idoko from the African Democratic Party scored 1,676 votes, placing fourth.

Acceptance speech

In his acceptance speech, Mr Asogwa said the election results showed the "overwhelming victory" of the people in the six local government areas of the district.

He promised to represent the senatorial district effectively and provide quality service to repay the trust and support from the residents.
