Troops from Sector 7, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have caught a suspected arms trafficking group in Kaduna State. They recovered three locally made AK-47 rifles and four submachine guns hidden in a vehicle, according to the Nigerian Army.
The Army shared this news in a statement on Tuesday through its official social media pages. They said this operation took place early on Monday at the Samaru Checkpoint in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area.
The operation was based on credible information about illegal arms being moved from Jos, Plateau State, to Niger State.
During a targeted stop-and-search operation, troops stopped an ash-coloured Mercedes-Benz. This led to the discovery of the firearms concealed inside the vehicle.
One suspect tried to run away during the operation but was shot while escaping.
The statement said, "In the course of the operation, one suspect attempted to evade arrest and was shot while trying to escape. He was promptly evacuated to Sector 7 Medical Centre in Kafanchan, where he is currently receiving treatment."
The Army mentioned that early investigations showed the weapons were likely supplied by two suspected arms dealers based in Jos. They were meant for an unknown buyer in Niger State.
This operation is a significant step against illegal arms trafficking. The Army stated, "This successful interception highlights the strong commitment of the Nigerian Army to disrupt arms proliferation and break down criminal networks that threaten national security."
The Army also promised to work closely with other security agencies to fight insecurity. They urged the public to help by providing timely and accurate information to track criminal activities.
