Residents of Amode community in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State were shocked when they discovered the body of a Point of Sale operator, Loveth Okafor, floating in a flooded canal.

PUNCH Metro learned on Thursday that the victim was reportedly raped and murdered before her body was thrown into the canal.

Our correspondent found out that police have arrested a suspect linked to this crime.

A disturbing video of the incident, which happened around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, shows Okafor’s half-naked body in the water, with her head resting against what looked like an abandoned building.

In the background of the video, a voice in Pidgin said, “They killed this lady at Amode. Loveth is gone. After they raped and killed her, they dumped her corpse inside this water.”

The deceased was found with her underwear pulled down, raising concerns that she might have been raped before her death.

**A photo obtained by PUNCH Metro showed the suspect after he was caught by residents, dragged through the flooded street, and handed over to the police.

One resident, who wanted to stay anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation, said Loveth had left home early for work before she was attacked.

“The girl was a PoS operator. She left for work very early because her sister had spoken to her that morning.

“After that, nobody heard from her again. Later, someone contacted the family and told them that she had been killed. Her body was eventually found that morning,” the source said.

Another resident, Romoke, claimed that the suspect was known in the community for violent acts.

“This particular guy who was arrested was notorious for this kind of thing. He had to be arrested. The police have refused to reveal his name,” she said.

Ololade Ajayi, the founder of DOHS Cares Foundation, a non-governmental organization that fights gender-based violence and tracks femicide cases, called for a thorough investigation and quick prosecution.

“It’s a femicide case because the victim was assaulted before she was killed. You can see from the pictures that she was semi-naked.

“There needs to be an autopsy, and the family must not be frustrated. This case should be treated seriously,” she said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said they received a report around 11:45 a.m. on July 14 that a man had allegedly killed a woman and was trying to dump her body in a canal along Monastery Road, Mopo, Ajah.

She said the Divisional Police Officer quickly led a team to the scene, where local security guards had already caught the suspect and handed him over to the police.

“The body of the deceased was taken to the General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for preservation and autopsy. The suspect remains in police custody, and the case has been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for further investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a thorough, careful, and discreet investigation into the matter. No stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice is served,” the statement said.

PUNCH Metro reports that this incident is the latest in a series of suspected femicide cases recorded in Lagos.

In May 2026, residents of Oke Egan in the Ilogbo-Eremi area of Badagry mourned after the body of a 60-year-old woman, Victoria Adegoke, was found in a nearby bush.

She was discovered naked and was suspected to have been raped and strangled before her body was dumped there.**
