The Ekiti State Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, Yinusa Ishola, and Razak Ibrahim from The Nation newspaper were attacked by suspected hoodlums in Iyin-Ekiti during the governorship election on Saturday.
The incident happened at Polling Unit 10, Ward B in Iyin-Ekiti, Irepodun/Irepodun Local Government Area of Ekiti. Some operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were in the area to check for alleged vote buying activities.
NAN reports that the hoodlums got angry because of the EFCC operatives. They accused the operatives of trying to intimidate voters.
In the chaos, the hoodlums ordered the EFCC operatives to leave. They then turned their attention to the two journalists who were there to observe the voting process.
Tension rose when the hoodlums recognized both Ishola and Ibrahim as journalists. They quickly attacked the reporters.
As the situation escalated, the journalists jumped into the bus that brought them to the community. They sustained minor injuries while trying to escape.
Mr Ishola shared his experience after the attack. He lost his office identity card during the incident. He thanked God for saving his life and that of Ibrahim.
He said things could have been worse if not for their driver. The driver quickly drove off as the hoodlums approached them.
