A Benin High Court on Friday ordered that Haruna Ayuba, 30, be held in a correctional centre. This is over charges of kidnapping and armed robbery in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The order came after a motion was filed by the police prosecutor, Polycap Odion. He works with the Directorate of Legal Services at the police command in Edo.
Mr Odion asked the court to keep the suspect in a correctional centre for 14 days. This is to wait for legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
He told the court that Haruna and another person, who is still on the run, committed these crimes on 6 July at Igue Farm Road, near Igarra, in the Auchi area.
According to him, the suspect planned to kidnap Atorugh Simeon and Mary Godwin. The prosecution also said that Haruna kidnapped the victims and robbed them of N15,000 in cash and food worth N40,000. He was armed with guns and other dangerous weapons.
Mr Odion said the defendant faces five charges. These include kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy.
He added that the alleged crimes break Section 412(2) of the Criminal Law of Edo, 2022. They also break Section 3 of the Edo Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2025, and Section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The judge, Terry Momodu, agreed with the prosecutor's request. He ordered that Haruna be kept in a correctional centre for 14 days. This is until they get legal advice from the state DPP.
Justice Momodu then postponed the case to 25 September.
