A High Court in Benin has ordered the remand of Victor Nanboya, 23, in a correctional center. He is accused of killing his nephew and niece.

The court made this decision on Friday after Police Prosecutor Emmanuel Ekibade filed an ex parte motion. Ekibade, from the Directorate of Legal Services of the police command in Edo, asked the court to keep the defendant in a correctional center for 14 days. This is to await legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Mr. Nanboya faces charges related to the alleged murder of his sister’s children. The victims are eight-year-old Praise Aloye and six-year-old Oghene Eze. The incident reportedly happened in Etsako West LGA of Edo.

During the court session, Mr. Nanboya admitted to the crime. He claimed he was under the influence of hard drugs when the incident occurred.

The police stated that the suspect took the two children into the bush, pretending to fetch firewood. Instead, he allegedly attacked them with a machete, leading to their deaths.

In the proof of evidence, Mr. Ekibade said the incident took place on 31 August at Ayogwiri Village in Etsako West LGA. The police charged Mr. Nanboya with murder, which violates Section 242(1) of the Criminal Law of Edo, 2022.

Judge Terry Momodu agreed to the request and ordered that the suspect be kept in a correctional center for 14 days. This is pending legal advice from the DPP.

Justice Momodu also set the next court date for 25 September.
