Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli, a Nigerian-American, was killed by his American girlfriend, Courtney Clenney, in Miami in 2022. Clenney has now been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Clenney, who is 30 years old and used to be an OnlyFans model, pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a deadly weapon on Monday. She will serve six years in prison and then five years of probation, according to Fox News.
Initially, Clenney faced a second-degree murder charge for the stabbing death of 27-year-old Obumseli on April 3, 2022. This incident happened at their luxury apartment in Miami’s Edgewater area.
As part of the plea deal, Clenney will get credit for the almost four years she has spent in custody since her arrest in August 2022. This means she has about two years left to serve before her probation starts.
After getting out, Clenney must go through mental health checks and get treatment for substance abuse.
Prosecutors have also said they will fight against any attempt by Clenney to make money from Obumseli’s death. Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff stated, "We do believe that nobody should benefit financially from murdering somebody."
Obumseli’s family shared in court that his death created a permanent gap in their lives. They said no punishment could bring back what they lost. His mother said, "No sentence, no plea can bring back my son to me."
A family representative mentioned that Obumseli “loved deeply” and stayed in what they called a harmful relationship despite past violence. The representative added, "Your actions have left the Obumseli family with a void that can never be filled. A chair where a family gathers for holidays will always remain empty."
The family expressed that Obumseli had a bright future ahead and that his life had value. They said he was “robbed of all those things” while Clenney still had her chance to continue living.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the plea deal meant that Obumseli’s family finally heard Clenney accept her role in his death. She noted that the family approved the plea agreement.
Obumseli, originally from the Dallas-Plano area of Texas, went to Plano East High School and Texas Tech University before moving to Miami.
His death followed a fight with Clenney, who claimed she acted in self-defense. Prosecutors showed evidence of a history of violence in their relationship.
The case sparked public discussions after old social media posts from Obumseli appeared online after his death. His family condemned the views he expressed in those posts while continuing to seek justice for his killing.
Obumseli’s family also filed a civil lawsuit against Clenney and the companies linked to the apartment building, claiming battery and poor security. The claims against Clenney were settled before the criminal plea deal was made.
This guilty plea brings closure to a case that has been in the news for over four years. Clenney is expected to spend about two more years in prison before starting her five years of probation.
