Delta Assembly Calls for Quick Cleanup After Oil Spill

The Delta State House of Assembly has called for urgent action to clean up an oil spill in Uzere Community, located in the Isoko South Local Government Area.

The assembly also wants relevant agencies to make sure the oil companies responsible assess and clean up the affected areas.

These resolutions came after Ferguson Onwo, who represents Isoko South II, moved a motion during a plenary session led by Speaker Dennis Guwor.

Onwo shared his worries about the difficulties the spill has caused. He pointed out that it poses serious threats to the environment, public health, and the livelihoods of the residents.

He asked the state government to look into the immediate and long-term causes of the spill. He also called for palliatives and relief materials for those affected.

Onwo insisted that the authorities need to ensure the oil companies assess the affected areas, contain the spill, and carry out a thorough cleanup.

Other lawmakers supported the motion. Kenneth Preyor, Charles Emetulu (Ndokwa West), James Augoye (Okpe), and Bridget Anyafulu (Oshimili South) shared their concerns.

They stressed the need for quick action to avoid further damage to the environment and protect residents from the spill's harmful effects.

The lawmakers urged oil companies in oil-producing areas to show more responsibility towards the communities. They want these companies to prioritize the welfare of host communities and respond quickly to environmental issues.

They believe affected communities should not bear the burden of oil spills alone. They called for everyone involved to take strong steps to safeguard the livelihoods of the residents.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the assembly approved the motion unanimously through a voice vote.

Speaker Guwor instructed the clerk of the house to inform the relevant authorities about the resolutions for necessary action.

He also tasked the House Committee on Legislative Compliance to keep an eye on how these resolutions are implemented and ensure the raised concerns receive proper attention.
