Diphtheria Outbreak Claims 15 Lives in Plateau State

An outbreak of diphtheria in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has led to the deaths of 15 people among 117 suspected cases reported, according to health officials.

The Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for Jos North, Baks Bulus, shared this information on Tuesday while speaking with journalists in Jos.

Mr Bulus mentioned that the deaths occurred within three days of the outbreak. He warned that the number of cases might rise if quick action is not taken to control the disease.

“So far, according to the data we have gathered from the communities, 117 people are suspected to have contracted the disease. Out of this number, we have already recorded 15 deaths,” he said.

Among the deceased were two siblings aged between 12 and 17 years, the official stated.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads from person to person, especially through close contact with someone who is infected, Mr Bulus explained. He added that sharing personal items like utensils and towels can increase the risk of spreading the disease.

He noted that vaccination is one of the best ways to prevent serious complications and deaths from diphtheria.

“For children who have been vaccinated, the effects may be milder and may not lead to death. But for a child who has not been fully vaccinated or has not completed the required doses, it can be deadly,” he said.

Mr Bulus urged residents in the affected areas to keep good hygiene, avoid crowded places, and seek medical help quickly if they show symptoms of diphtheria.

He also warned against self-medication and relying only on patent medicine vendors.

“Most times, people resort to chemists and self-medication, which we do not advise. The best approach is to visit primary healthcare centres where we have the necessary structures and personnel in place,” he said.

The DSNO reported that health workers have been sent to affected communities to boost disease surveillance, educate residents, and help curb further spread.

He urged parents and guardians to ensure their children get the recommended doses of diphtheria vaccines.

Meanwhile, attempts to get more details from the Plateau State Ministry of Health were unsuccessful.

The State Epidemiologist, Maren Job, did not respond to calls made to her phone.
