Ekiti Police Increase Traffic Checks for the Festive Season

The Ekiti State Police Command is worried about the rising number of road accidents. Many people have died or been injured in these accidents, especially in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Commissioner of Police Michael Falade said the police will increase traffic patrols and work with traffic management agencies. This is to reduce accidents and reckless driving as the Yuletide season approaches.

Falade shared this in a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, on Monday. He urged all road users to prioritize safety over speed and convenience. He said, "No journey is worth the loss of a life. Every road user has a responsibility to protect themselves and others."

He pointed out that the festive season usually brings more vehicles on the road and more commercial activities. He advised road users to obey traffic rules and signals. He also asked them to avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, dangerous driving, and using alcohol or drugs while driving.

Falade reminded drivers and motorcycle riders to carry valid licenses. They should ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid overloading, and minimize distractions. He stressed the importance of using safety equipment like seat belts and crash helmets. He encouraged all road users to be patient, stay alert, respect pedestrians, and prioritize safety.

He linked the rise in road accidents to reckless driving, excessive speeding, impatience, and ignoring traffic rules and signs. He said these behaviors endanger the lives of motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and others on the road.

The police command urged motorists, motorcycle riders, tricycle operators, and other road users to be more cautious and responsible on the roads.

Falade added, "The Command will intensify traffic patrols and work with traffic management agencies. Anyone caught breaking traffic laws will face the consequences."

He also encouraged the public to report any traffic violations or emergencies to the nearest police station or call 08062335577.

Falade concluded by saying, "The Ekiti State Police Command is committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring safer roads for all residents and visitors throughout the festive season and beyond."
