An elderly man, Onwe Ubochi, was reportedly killed in Osege village, Umuogodo Oshia Ngbo community in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Ubochi was allegedly murdered after he led a group of elders in prayer for the 2027 All Progressives Grand Alliance candidates on Monday.
He was said to have been attacked on his way home from the prayer session along a village path. His body was later dragged to a stream in a nearby forest and dumped there.
The Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident on Wednesday. They said information available to them showed that Ubochi left home on Monday, but his body was found on a farm path on Tuesday.
A statement from the command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the deceased was taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead and his body placed in the morgue.
The statement said, "The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, has started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Amos Onwe Ubochi, who left his home on 17 August 2026 but did not return.
"On 18 August 2026, we received information that the lifeless body of Amos Onwe Ubochi was found along a bush path in the community. Once we got the report, our operatives visited the scene and moved the body to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead.
"The command has started a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances of his death and to find those responsible.
"We assure the public that we will do all we can to uncover the truth behind this incident. We urge anyone with useful information to come forward."
Tochukwu Ogalagu, the All Progressives Grand Alliance House of Representatives candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, condemned the killing. He promised that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Ogalagu called Ubochi’s death painful and said his enemies could not stop a project whose time had come. He asked his supporters to stay calm.
He said, "My dear brothers and sisters, I feel a deep personal loss as I condemn the brutal murder of Elder Onwe Ubochi from Osege village, Umuogudu Oshia Ngbo, Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State by unknown attackers who ambushed him on his way home, killed him, and dragged his body to a stream far from the road to his house.
"This elderly man led other elders in a prayer session and endorsed the APGA candidates on 17 August 2026.
"He was healthy during the consultation and was seen on camera fulfilling his role as an elder.
"After the consultation, the old man was walking home alone when he was ambushed, kidnapped, killed, and dumped in a stream. His family searched for him all night but only found his body sitting in a stream far from the road to their home. He was fully clothed when discovered in the stream.
"The police have been informed about the incident for further investigations, and the body has been taken to the mortuary.
"I assure APGA supporters that we will leave no stone unturned in investigating this terrible murder, and those involved will face justice.
"The killing of Elder Onwe Ubochi reflects the threats from fading political figures in Ebony/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency. The blood of this innocent man will speak against the culprits and their backers.
"I urge all APGA members in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency to remain calm, vigilant, and committed to our mission as the police and other law enforcement agencies uncover the details of this terrible murder.
"I assure everyone that no amount of threats, intimidation, political schemes, or violence against innocent people will stop an idea whose time has come."
