The Kwara State Police Command has started investigating the murder of a farmer, Azeez Garba, in Isin Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case. He wants them to use all available resources to find and arrest those responsible for the murder.
This information came from a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
Adekimi described the killing as "cruel, senseless and unacceptable." He assured the public that the police would work hard to bring the killers to justice.
The statement said, "The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full and discreet investigation into the gruesome murder of a farmer, Mr Azeez Garba. His body was found on his farmland along the Owa-Onire route, near the boundary between Isanlu-Isin and Owu-Isin in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State."
According to the police, early findings showed that Garba left home for his farm and did not return. This made his family and local vigilantes start searching for him.
"His motorcycle was found parked on the farm. His lifeless body was discovered nearby with deep machete wounds," the statement continued.
The police said no arrests have been made yet. They assured the grieving family and the public that they were following every possible lead.
"Investigators are working hard to find out what happened in this tragic case. They will ensure that everyone involved in this terrible crime is caught and brought to justice," the statement said.
This news comes just days after the deceased's family called on security agencies to look into the murder and make sure that those responsible face prosecution.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the deceased's second daughter, Abdulazeez Rofiat, said her father went to his cocoa farm but never came back. She said local hunters later found his body in a nearby bush after spotting his motorcycle at the farm.
"We want those responsible for this terrible crime to be identified, arrested and prosecuted according to the law. My father deserves justice, and our family deserves answers. We will continue to seek justice until those responsible are held accountable," she said.
