The Enugu State Police Command is searching for the driver and conductor of a Mitsubishi L300 bus. They are wanted for allegedly attacking police officers and trying to kill them while also stealing a police rifle.

The police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, shared this in a statement on Sunday. He said the suspects face charges of conspiracy, serious assault, dangerous driving, attempted murder, and snatching a police rifle.

The police say the incident happened around 1:20 PM on July 9 at All Saints Roundabout along Abakaliki Road in Enugu.

Ndukwe explained that the Distress Response Squad acted after getting information that the driver and conductor had attacked a traffic officer on duty. They stopped the commercial bus, but the driver tried to flee.

"Instead of stopping for arrest, the driver slowed down before speeding off to escape. In the process, he knocked down one of the officers and dragged away the officer's AK-47 rifle, which got caught in the vehicle."

"During the chase, the suspects threw the rifle out of the vehicle at IMT Bus Stop along the same road before speeding away. The rifle was quickly recovered, still intact with its ammunition," the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, has ordered a full investigation and increased efforts to catch the suspects. He also called on the driver and conductor to turn themselves in for questioning.

Giwa said, "All lawful measures are being used to arrest them." He urged the public to ignore what he called misleading stories about the incident. He warned against attacking or blocking police officers while they do their jobs.

He stated such actions are serious crimes and will be punished according to the law.
