The Enugu State Police Command is looking for a commercial bus driver and his conductor. This follows an incident where they attacked police officers and tried to murder them. They also stole a police rifle.
Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson, shared this news in a statement on Sunday in Enugu. The suspects were driving a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus. They are wanted for serious crimes like conspiracy, dangerous driving, assault, attempted murder, and taking a police rifle.
Mr Ndukwe, who is a Superintendent of Police, said the incident happened around 1:20 p.m. on July 9 at All Saints Roundabout on Abakaliki Road, Enugu.
"After getting information that the driver and conductor attacked a traffic police officer on duty, members of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) stopped the vehicle," Mr Ndukwe explained.
He added that instead of stopping, the driver pretended to slow down before speeding away. In the process, the vehicle hit an officer, and the officer's AK-47 rifle got caught in the bus and was dragged away.
During the chase, the suspects threw the rifle away at IMT Bus Stop along the same road before escaping. The police confirmed they found the weapon and its ammunition intact.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, has ordered a full investigation. He also said efforts are being made to catch and prosecute the suspects. He urged them to turn themselves in for questioning, warning that all legal measures will be used to arrest them.
Additionally, Mr Giwa asked the public to ignore "misleading stories" about the incident. He warned against blocking or attacking officers while they carry out their duties. He stressed that such actions are serious crimes that will be punished under the law.
