Enugu Government Suspends Traditional Ruler, Explains Why

The Enugu State Government has suspended Christopher Nyia, the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South. This decision follows an alleged crisis in the community.

Charles Egumgbe, the State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, announced the suspension in a statement from the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Emeka Nebeife. This announcement was made on Wednesday in Enugu.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, on 15 July, the ministry suspended three traditional rulers and four President-Generals from various communities in the Ezeagu Council Area due to misconduct related to security issues.

Egumgbe said, "The suspension of Nyia is in the interest of peace, order and good governance for the Obeagu Ugwuaji community."

He mentioned that the community is facing a crisis because of serious misconduct allegations against the traditional ruler from some community members. The official handed over the suspension letter to Nyia on 28 July, following a directive from Governor Peter Mbah.

The government has set up an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the underlying causes of the crisis that disrupted peace in the community.

Egumgbe explained, "The panel of inquiry is expected to ascertain the role played by the traditional ruler in connection with the breakdown of law and order."

The panel will also identify those involved in the crisis and determine their roles, including the traditional ruler and others linked to the unrest in the community.

The government has given the panel two weeks to finish its work.
