The Enugu State Government has given the green light for 19,000 new housing units. This move aims to tackle the housing shortage and lower housing costs in the state.

The approval happened during a State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Enugu on Sunday.

After the meeting, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ben Okoh, talked to reporters. He said these housing projects will support the ongoing work on the New Enugu City.

He added that after finishing the 6.5-kilometre dual carriageway for the first phase of the New Enugu City project, the council okayed the building of 1,000 fully detached terrace homes.

These new homes will include four-bedroom and five-bedroom options.

“In addition to the 1,000 housing units, the state government is also developing 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate in Enugu to address further the housing deficit and housing costs in the state,” Mr Okoh said.

He mentioned that the mass housing scheme will come with important infrastructure and services. This includes roads, water supply, and electricity to make it a well-equipped residential area.
