FG approves ₦46 billion for Kano airport runway repair

The Federal Government has approved ₦46 billion for fixing the main and secondary runways at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA). This is part of efforts to improve aviation facilities and passenger experience in Nigeria.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, shared the news on Tuesday. He made the announcement during the opening of the upgraded Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.

Mr Keyamo mentioned that the runway repair will boost Kano's role as a key aviation hub for northern Nigeria.

"Earlier today, I commissioned the newly upgraded Dankabo Domestic Terminal at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano," the minister said in a post on his official X account.

He added that the event had the Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director and CEO of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, in attendance.

The minister explained that the upgraded terminal will enhance the travel experience for those using the airport.

"The upgraded facilities are designed to deliver a more seamless and world-class passenger experience," he stated.

Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is among Nigeria’s busiest international airports. It plays a vital role in domestic and international passenger and cargo flights, especially for people from northern Nigeria.

The runway repair is expected to improve how the airport operates, increase safety, and allow for more aircraft movements. At the same time, the new domestic terminal aims to make travel more comfortable for passengers.

This development is part of the Federal Government’s plan to upgrade airport facilities across the country. Recently, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and FAAN have been working on upgrading terminals and repairing airports to make air travel safer and more efficient for passengers.

This latest investment also comes as the government aims to make Kano a key aviation and commercial center. They want to take advantage of its strategic location and its long-standing role in connecting northern Nigeria with other parts of the country and international locations.
