The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandma after finding 13kg of cocaine in her bags at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos.
This information was shared in a statement by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, on Sunday in Abuja.
The agency said the drugs were hidden in plantain peels. They looked like real plantains and were placed among other food items.
Mr Babafemi mentioned that the suspect, who works as a caregiver in the UK, was caught at the departure hall of Terminal 2 at the Lagos Airport. She was trying to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London on Sunday, 28 June.
A detailed search of her luggage led to finding 31 large wraps of cocaine. These were packaged to look like bunches of plantains, weighing a total of 13 kilograms.
“In her statement, the elderly woman admitted full ownership of the recovered cocaine exhibits,” he said.
