Hello Tractor wants better teamwork for farming machines

Hello Tractor emphasizes the need for teamwork among various sectors to enhance agricultural mechanization in Nigeria. They believe this collaboration is key to increasing food production.

Hello Tractor wants better teamwork for farming machines

Agricultural tech company Hello Tractor is calling for better teamwork among governments, banks, tech firms, and private operators. They want to create a sustainable farming machine system that can boost food production in Nigeria.

The company noted that recent investments by some state governments in tractors and farming tools are a good sign. Still, they stressed that long-term success depends on building the right systems for using, maintaining, and financing this equipment.

Nneka Enwonwu, the country director for Hello Tractor, spoke on behalf of the company in Nigeria. She emphasized that agricultural mechanisation should not just be about getting tractors. It requires effort from many different groups working together.

“The future of mechanisation in Nigeria cannot depend exclusively on government ownership models, nor can it be left entirely to the private sector,” Ms Enwonwu said in a statement on Thursday.

She pointed out that sustainable agricultural progress will need teamwork among government bodies, financial institutions, tech companies, private operators, and farmers.

According to her, farming is done within tight planting and harvesting times, so getting mechanisation services on time is crucial for productivity. She added that delays in tractor services during important farming times can lower crop yields and hurt farmers’ earnings.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, launched 2,000 tractors for Nigerian farmers last year. Other states, like Jigawa and Bauchi, have also recently joined in providing tractors for farmers.

The role of technology and finance

Ms Enwonwu said technology is becoming more important for improving mechanisation. It helps with real-time management of fleets, tracking equipment, scheduling maintenance, and coordinating operations.

She explained that digital platforms can enable governments and private operators to use tractors better. This can reduce downtime, improve accountability, and ensure good returns on investments in mechanisation.

She also highlighted that access to finance is a major issue for the sector. Rising costs for equipment, fuel, and maintenance make it hard for small farmers and service providers to expand mechanisation services.

“Mechanisation succeeds when all parts of the ecosystem work together. Government provides scale and strategic direction. The private sector brings operational efficiency and innovation. Financial institutions provide growth capital. Technology improves coordination and accountability. Farmers remain at the centre of the entire system,” she said.

Wider benefits for the economy

Ms Enwonwu mentioned that building a strong mechanisation system would bring broader economic benefits beyond farming. This includes better food security, job creation in rural areas, business development, and youth employment.

She urged policymakers and industry players to focus on creating systems that keep farming equipment productive and available over time. They should not just aim to increase the number of tractors.

“Nigeria does not simply need more tractors. Nigeria needs a modern mechanisation system capable of delivering reliable services to farmers at scale,” she said.

Hello Tractor operates in 20 African countries. The company uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology and a location-based booking platform. This connects equipment owners with smallholder farmers who need mechanisation services.
