Kano sanitation board tells roadside traders to stop dumping waste

The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board has warned roadside traders and other sellers against dumping waste on the roads and in drainage channels.

The Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr Muhammad Salisu-Khalil, shared this message in a statement in Kano on Tuesday. The statement was issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Ahmad.

Traders selling boiled and roasted maize and other food items along major roads must provide waste bins at their business locations. This will help them properly dispose of the waste from their activities.

“Those who do business along France Road, Katsina Road, Maiduguri Road, Zaria Road, and Zoo Road must keep proper sanitation.

“Some maize sellers throw away maize husks, cobs, and other waste on the roads and in drainage channels. This adds to the blockage of waterways, waste build-up, and pollution,” the statement said.

The board pointed out that it conducts street cleaning, waste removal, and sanitation exercises daily across the state. But it expressed concern that some traders still dump waste at places that have just been cleaned.

Such actions go against the government’s efforts to keep the environment clean and healthy. The board stressed that keeping the environment clean is everyone's responsibility.

The statement added that the board will keep enforcing environmental sanitation laws. Those who break these laws will face legal action, including prosecution in an environmental sanitation court.

“The board’s goal is not to stop residents from doing their business. We just want to make sure these activities are done in a clean and responsible way.”
