LAWMA closes shops for dumping waste on roads

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has locked up several shops and businesses along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba area. This action follows ongoing issues with people dumping refuse in the road median, breaking the state’s environmental laws.

PUNCH Metro got a statement from LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi. He said this enforcement operation happened on Thursday. It was carried out by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation Surveillance and Enforcement team. This step was taken after many warnings and continued non-compliance from traders. Their actions have hurt environmental cleanliness and damaged public infrastructure.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, spoke about the situation. He said this action was necessary to bring back order to the environment, protect public health, and make sure waste management rules are followed.

"The affected shops and market stalls will stay sealed until the traders follow all sanitation rules. The authority must be sure that proper steps are taken to prevent this from happening again," he said.

Gbadegesin noted that despite efforts to educate traders and market leaders, some people still dump waste carelessly. This situation forced the authority to act according to Lagos State environmental laws.

"Road medians, drainage channels, and other public spaces are not for waste disposal. LAWMA will keep taking strong enforcement action against anyone or any business that harms the environment," he said.

He also urged traders, market groups, and residents to work with their assigned Private Sector Participation operators. They should dispose of waste properly and help the government keep the environment clean and healthy.

Gbadegesin added that the authority will keep mixing public awareness with strict enforcement. This is to improve compliance with environmental laws and enhance the living conditions of Lagos residents.
