The senator for Kebbi South, Garba Maidoki, has left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He says unresolved issues from the party's recent primaries in Kebbi State pushed him to make this move.

Maidoki, who leads the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and is the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, shared his decision in a letter to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The letter was read during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Reports say Maidoki was among those who could not participate in the APC primaries in the state. He explained his choice came after he spoke with his constituents.

"There is a lingering internal crisis in the APC, especially arising from the Kebbi primary elections. After due consultation with my constituents, I have decided to defect to the ADC, which I believe aligns more with the interests of my district," Maidoki said.

Appeal to Reconsider

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who led the session, urged Maidoki to think again about his decision. He said the problems in Kebbi’s APC could still be fixed through talks.

"I wish to intervene and plead with the distinguished senator to rescind his decision. There is no internal problem in the APC in Kebbi State. This is more of a family dispute and we can reconcile. I move that this defection be stepped down for reconciliation," Barau stated.

But Maidoki stood firm. He said he had already decided to leave the ruling party.

PUNCH Online reported earlier that Maidoki resigned from the APC in May, ahead of the party’s senatorial primary election. He confirmed his resignation in a letter dated May 14, 2026, which he sent to the APC Ward Chairman of Rafin Zuru Ward in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Maidoki’s defection is part of a larger trend of politicians moving from the APC to the ADC as the 2027 general elections approach. Many are unhappy with the party primaries and ongoing internal disputes.
