The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has broken up all party caucuses in the 16 local government areas. This move is part of efforts to strengthen the party for the 2027 general elections.
The decision came from the State Executive Committee and other important members during a closed-door meeting with the party leader, Bukola Saraki, who is also a former Senate President. This meeting took place during his recent homecoming and talks with stakeholders in the state.
The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, announced this in a statement on Sunday. He said the dissolution is the start of a major reorganization of the party's structures in Kwara.
Adewаra mentioned that the party is already making plans for the 2027 elections. He believes it is vital to refresh its structures, bring in new members, and encourage wider participation among party members.
He added that this action aims to create a better and more inclusive political setup. This will help the PDP win elections at all levels in the 2027 elections.
He said the decision was made within the powers of the State Executive Committee. They want to take steps that are necessary to strengthen and reorganize the party for the benefit of its members and its chances in elections.
"The journey towards 2027 has effectively commenced, and the party considers it necessary to refresh its structures, bring in new hands, broaden participation and create a more effective and inclusive political machinery capable of delivering victory for the PDP at all levels," Adewara said.
The party thanked members of the dissolved caucuses for their dedication, loyalty, sacrifice, and contributions to the growth of the PDP in Kwara State.
The PDP made it clear that this dissolution should not be seen as a rejection of the contributions made by outgoing caucus members. They believe these members will still offer their experience to help the party succeed.
"We sincerely appreciate all members of the outgoing caucuses for their dedication, sacrifices, loyalty and contributions to the growth and development of the PDP in Kwara State," he said.
The PDP called on its members across the state to stay calm, united, and committed to the party. This comes as they start forming new caucuses.
The party said it is already setting up ways to recruit, form, and inaugurate the new caucuses in all 16 local government areas. This recent change happens as political parties in the state ramp up preparations and internal adjustments for the 2027 general elections.
