Labour Party Wants Nigerians to Take a Cue from Brazil's Election
The Labour Party wants Nigerians to back its candidates in the 2027 elections, inspired by Lula's re-election in Brazil as a sign of social democracy's power.

The Labour Party is calling on Nigerians to back its candidates in the 2027 elections. They are using the re-election of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as proof that voters can use their votes to push for social democracy.
The party believes Lula's win shows that voters can trust a political party that focuses on social justice, economic inclusion, and the well-being of the people.
In a statement on Friday, Ken Asogwa, the Labour Party's National Publicity Secretary, congratulated Lula on winning a fourth presidential term. He called his victory a sign of support for his leadership and the principles of his Workers’ Party.
Lula got 51.79 percent of the valid votes in Brazil's presidential run-off on October 25. He beat his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, who received 48.21 percent. This win gives Lula an unprecedented fourth term, which is not consecutive.
Asogwa noted that the Labour Party and Brazil’s Workers’ Party share similar ideals, especially their focus on social democracy.
He said, “Our shared beliefs and political philosophy, firmly rooted in social democracy, have continued to bring our paths together in many respects.
“His victory aptly demonstrates the confidence reposed in his leadership and political party by the Brazilian people, who have once again given a mandate to a government whose ideological foundation is firmly rooted in social democracy.
“As Nigeria prepares for the coming general elections, the Labour Party wishes to use this opportunity to encourage Nigerians to draw inspiration from the Brazilian experience by supporting Labour Party candidates across all elective positions.”
The LP spokesman urged Nigerians to look at Brazil’s election results. He wants them to vote for Labour Party candidates in all positions during the next elections.

He pointed to the leadership of Abia State Governor Alex Otti as proof that the party can lead and meet the needs of Nigerians.
“Through the transformational leadership being provided in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti, the Labour Party has demonstrated its capacity, commitment and understanding of the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people,” Asogwa said.
He argued that the party’s social democratic thinking provides Nigeria with a different way of governing. This approach focuses on the welfare of citizens, social justice, economic inclusion, and fair development.
He said, “Our political heritage, firmly rooted in social democracy, offers Nigeria an opportunity to pursue a governance philosophy that prioritises the welfare of the people, social justice, economic inclusion and equitable development.
“We firmly believe that Nigeria stands to gain immensely from having the Labour Party provide leadership across all tiers of government, including the presidency,” he added.
Asogwa encouraged Nigerians to keep trusting the party and its vision as political activities ramp up for the 2027 elections.
He said Brazil’s experience shows that citizens can shape their country’s future through voting. He is hopeful that Nigerian voters can do the same.
“The Brazilian experience has demonstrated the power of the people to shape their political destiny through the ballot. The same is possible in Nigeria because People Power is greater than political power,” he stated.
