The Lagos State government has confirmed that they arrested a man for allegedly threatening and trying to take property from a widow in Ikorodu after her husband died.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) shared this news in a statement on Wednesday. They acted quickly after getting reports about the woman’s situation on Tuesday.
The agency said the widow claimed that her late husband’s family threatened her life, attacked her physically, and tried to take her properties and those of her children.
The agency did not reveal the widow’s name. She lives in Ikorodu with her two children.
The case drew public attention when activist Harrison Gwamnishu posted about it on social media on Tuesday.
Mr Gwamnishu said that after the woman’s husband died on 20 July, his father, mother, and brother allegedly tried to take her home and other belongings.
He claimed that the family told the widow to move all her things and her two sons’ things into one room in the house. They were also planning to sell the late husband’s car and share his properties.
The DSVA said the widow had already reported the situation to the Owutu Police Division. They said they quickly involved the police officers in charge of the case.
“Preliminary feedback from the police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue,” the statement said.
The agency noted that the Lagos State government is dedicated to ensuring the safety of the widow and her children. They are also working with relevant groups to make sure justice is served according to the law.
The agency praised members of the public and partner organizations for their quick reporting, which improves the state’s response to sexual and gender-based violence.
It encouraged anyone facing domestic violence, abuse, or intimidation to report such cases quickly for help.
