Maduka University Teaching Hospital Nsukka now open for patients
Maduka University Teaching Hospital has opened in Nsukka, transforming a personal home into a healthcare facility. Dr. Onyishi's generous act benefits the community.

A kind act by a chancellor gives Nsukka and nearby areas a new place for quality healthcare.
Some buildings are made to be hospitals. This one started as a home.
On Monday, 2nd November 2026, Maduka University Teaching Hospital, Nsukka, began full operations at 37 Orba Road, Amukwa, Nsukka.
The building now treating patients was once the home of Dr Samuel Maduka Onyishi, MON, Chancellor and owner of Maduka University. He decided to change his personal house into a teaching hospital for the community’s benefit.
A Selfless Gift
A private home is the most personal space someone can have. It is where families come together, where memories are created, and where hard work finds comfort. Dr Onyishi gave that up so others could get medical care.
This choice shows his caring nature.
Many wealthy people invest in properties and businesses. But not many give up their own house for the sake of strangers who are sick or in need. The large, beautiful building, with its round edges, arched windows, and shaded balconies, was built for personal comfort. Now, it serves the public good, guided by the hospital’s motto, “Service to Humanity.”
This spirit shines through in the message the hospital shares: “We look forward to serving you and your loved ones with quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services.”
First Patients Arrive
The community did not wait long to respond. When the hospital opened on Monday, 2nd November 2026, the first person to register as a patient was Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi (SMO). He traveled from Ekwegbe very early that morning with two goals: to be the first patient at Maduka University Teaching Hospital and the first member of the public to use its services. He accomplished both and is happy he did.
Mr. Anslem Ugwu was the second patient registered that day. SMO paid for the registration and consultation fees for both of them. So, the first two patients began their care with a kind act towards each other.
This is a fitting start. A home given for the community welcomed its first visitors from the community. One traveled from Ekwegbe very early in the morning to be among the first to benefit.
Importance for Nsukka
Nsukka is a university town and serves as a gateway for many nearby communities. Residents here, like many Nigerians, face the stress of traveling long distances for specialized care, crowded facilities, and delays that can worsen health issues.

A fully functioning teaching hospital in Amukwa brings healthcare closer. Families will have a reliable place for everyday medical needs and emergencies without traveling far from their loved ones. The word accessible in the hospital’s promise means a lot to those who have had to consider the cost and distance of getting treatment.
Maduka University Teaching Hospital stands on three key promises: Quality Healthcare, Teaching, and Service to Humanity.
These commitments describe a place that will treat patients while training the next generation of Nigerian healthcare workers.
Each trained worker carries the benefits far beyond Nsukka, into hospitals and communities across Nigeria.
Services Offered
From day one, the hospital offers a wide range of services:
* Outpatient Clinic Services: consultations and care for patients who do not need to stay overnight
* Inpatient Services: admission and 24-hour care for patients needing longer treatment
* Laboratory Services: diagnostic tests for accurate, timely care
* Radiology Services: imaging to help doctors understand health issues
* Maternity and Child Health: special care for mothers, newborns, and kids
* Emergency Services: quick response when time is critical
* Pharmacy Services: medicines available in the hospital
Your Health Matters
The hospital’s tagline, “Your Health, Our Priority,” is a promise the team plans to keep every day, starting from the first. The institution’s closing words show its goal: “Together for a Healthier Community.”
