The Kebbi State Police have arrested a 45-year-old man, Bello Abubakar. He is accused of trying to kill a commercial motorcyclist and stealing his motorcycle in Shanga Local Government Area.
The police said the attack happened on August 23, 2026, around 4:00 p.m. The victim, 22-year-old Bello Umar, a motorcycle rider from Wasagu Village in Danko/Wasagu LGA, was found with a serious head injury. This took place at Tungar Dariya Bush, close to Makera Village in Shanga LGA.
According to a statement from the Kebbi Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, the victim was taken to Koko General Hospital for treatment and was later discharged.
The police explained that their investigation showed that Abubakar had hired the victim’s motorcycle from Koko Town. He then attacked Umar with a hoe at Tungar Dariya Bush.
“He covered the victim’s body with leaves, thinking he was dead, and then took the motorcycle to Yauri Town,” the statement said.
After more investigation, the police operatives found the stolen motorcycle. This led to the arrest of Abubakar.
The police said the suspect is cooperating with the investigation. They added that the case has been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, called the act “despicable and a direct assault on human life and livelihood.”
Hadejia warned that the police would keep pursuing and prosecuting anyone who targets motorcycle operators and other law-abiding citizens.
“The Command will hunt down and prosecute anyone who preys on commercial motorcycle riders or any law-abiding citizen,” the commissioner stated.
He also praised the police operatives for their professionalism and quick action in recovering the stolen motorcycle and arresting the suspect.
