A man known as Basit has been beaten to death by a crowd in Lagos. This happened just weeks after he returned to Nigeria for his wedding. The incident occurred in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, according to reports.
Sources say the tragedy took place on Wednesday night. It was reported that Basit hit a man with his car in the Patey area. Instead of stopping, he drove away, which led to some residents chasing him.
A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous for safety, explained, “He was coming from the other end of Freeman Street, and the incident happened when he was getting close to the other end. A resident was trying to cross the road when he rammed him. The moment it happened, people thought he would wait, but he did not. He was later chased and caught before the mob descended on him.”
Another resident, Afolabi Lawal, shared that Basit was attacked with dangerous objects as the mob beat him. He said, “He was hit with sticks and bottles on his head, which caused him to sustain a head injury. He went unconscious and later died.”
After the beating, the mob fled when they realized Basit was unresponsive. Reports say Basit was just two weeks away from his wedding.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was not available for comments on Sunday. Calls to her phone went unanswered, and a text message sent had not been replied to by the time this report was made.
Meanwhile, a police source informed PUNCH Metro that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. “Some suspects have been taken into custody, and the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue,” the source revealed.
