Nigeria is Greater Than Any Politician, By Murtadha Gusau

Murtadha Gusau emphasizes that Nigeria's true strength lies beyond its politicians. The land and its people are greater than temporary power holders.

Nigeria is Greater Than Any Politician, By Murtadha Gusau

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful.

All praise is for Allah, the Owner of all power. He gives power to whom He wants and takes it from those He chooses. He lifts up whom He will and brings down whom He decides. All good is in His hand.

Dear friends in faith! Look at the ground where you stand. This rich Nigerian soil has survived empires, colonial rulers, military governments, and democratic leaders.

Respected brothers and sisters! The truth is that Nigeria, our land, our shared spirit, and our trust from Allah, is far bigger and greater than any politician or temporary power holder. While leaders come and go like shadows, our land and its people answer to a higher order.

Honestly, politicians are just temporary tenants in a land owned by Allah. They hold positions for a few years, but their actions and the fate of over 200 million people last long after they are gone.

Allah warns us in the Qur’an about the dangers of worldly power and riches. He says:

"Know that the life of this world is only play, and amusement, and adornment, and boasting among yourselves, and competition in increase of wealth and children..." [Qur’an, 57:20]

When politicians walk in power, surrounded by luxury and praise, they often fall into pride. They start to think that the nation cannot survive without them. But Islam teaches us otherwise through its teachings of humility.

Let us ask ourselves, where is Pharaoh today? Where is Qarun? Where are the kings of old? They came into this world with nothing and left with either a good or bad legacy. Nigeria will not fall because a politician doesn’t succeed; Nigeria belongs to Allah, and its people are its true strength.

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters! We need to change how we think. We have put flawed leaders on a pedestal, forgetting that real change starts from within ourselves.

We complain about corruption, yet we also take part in small corrupt acts in our markets, schools, and workplaces. A nation reflects the character of its people. If we want a better Nigeria, we must recognize that our duty to this land is a religious responsibility.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

"Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Fellow believers! Nigeria’s rivers, forests, resources, and talented people are blessings we will be asked about on the Day of Judgment. Some politicians use ethnic and religious divisions to mislead us for their own gain. Wallahi, to fall for this is a spiritual sickness. Our strength does not come from Aso Rock; it comes from the hard work of market women in Kano, the skills of young people in Lagos, and the prayers of good people all over this land.

Think of a wealthy politician who held the power of many lives in his hands. He controlled budgets, chose who prospered and who did not, and was surrounded by guards. Fast forward to years later. He lies in a lonely grave. The noise is gone. The wealth is shared. The parties have moved on to new faces.

Above his grave, the ordinary people of Nigeria, the ones he overlooked, continue to live, work, and thrive.

Who was greater? The man who thought he owned the country or the country that buried him in its soil?

Nigeria is an idea written by divine will. It is made up of over 250 ethnic groups brought together by Allah’s wisdom. Allah says:

"O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another..." [Qur’an, 49:13]

Brothers and sisters! To move from just thinking to real action, every Nigerian must adopt three changes in mindset:

1. Stop Worshipping Politicians

Do not see elected officials as masters. In Islam, leaders are meant to serve the people. Hold them accountable, but do not tie your hopes or your identity to their names.

2. Let Go of Cynicism

Despair is a sin. When you say "Nigeria can never change," you doubt Allah’s ability to change hearts. Keep working, keep learning, and keep doing good in your own circles.

3. Vote and Act with Integrity

On election days, do not sell your soul for a bag of rice or small cash. Wallahi, that momentary gain can harm your children’s future. Act as a protector of the trust.

O Nigerians! Hold your heads high. Governments will rise and fall. Policies will shift. But your faith, your strength, and your commitment to Allah are unshakeable. Do not let short-term leaders spoil a lasting blessing. Build your lives on fairness, teach your kids to be honest, and remember that this great nation is upheld by Allah, not by politicians.

Dear friends! Fear Allah, for true power belongs to Al-Malik, The Real King.

Remember, our beautiful Nigeria is a lasting trust from Allah, a land of millions of souls, and more significant than any single politician.

We look around and see people caught up in the names of leaders. We tie our hopes, our frustrations, and our futures to individual politicians, people just like us, who will eventually return to dust.

Respected brothers and sisters! Politicians are just temporary figures. They may hold office for a few years, then they fade into history. But Nigeria, with its over 200 million people, innocent children, hardworking mothers, and spiritual legacy, is a sacred trust.

So do not sacrifice your unity, your peace, or your soul for the fleeting desires of any leader. When politicians create division, remember they are small, but our shared destiny under Allah is vast. Nigeria is bigger than any politician’s dreams.

My dear friends! See the world with clarity. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

"What have I to do with this world? My relation to this world is like a traveler who rests under a tree and then leaves it.” [Tirmidhi]

If this world is just a temporary shade, what then is the chair of a governor, a senator, or any politician? It is just a shadow of a shadow.

Why do we let their failures break our hearts? Why do we allow their campaigns to divide our communities? Why do we care for leaders who don’t even know us?

Fellow Nigerians! Remember, one politician is just one person. But Nigeria is a collection of millions of prayers rising to the skies every night. Please, do not raise a servant to the level of a master. Your loyalty belongs to Allah, and your responsibility lies with your neighbors, your community, and your country.

There’s a lesson from our righteous predecessors. A powerful leader once rode through his kingdom, demanding respect. He passed by a wise scholar sitting humbly in the dirt. The leader asked:

"Do you know who I am?"

The scholar replied:

"Yes. I know your start and your end. You began as a drop of fluid, and you will end as a decaying body in the ground. And between those two, you carry waste."

The leader cried.

Let this remind us of Nigeria’s political scene. No matter how loud a politician’s entourage, no matter their wealth, they will face the grave alone. The land they rule will outlast them. The people they govern will continue on. The nation is the canvas; the politician is just a fleeting drop of ink.

Awaken, Nigerian citizens and Muslim believers! Stop waiting for a political savior to fix Nigeria. Our nation’s renewal lies in changing our hearts, being honest in our markets, caring for our neighbors, and returning to Allah.

Wallahi, a politician cannot mend a home where the character has decayed. A politician cannot bring peace to a community that has abandoned justice.

Nigeria will endure long after today’s political leaders are forgotten. Protect your nation, serve its people, and fear no one but Allah!

Dear believers! When the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) had to leave Makkah, he looked back with tears and said:

"How sweet you are as a land, and how dear you are to me! If my people had not driven me away, I would not have lived anywhere else.” [Tirmidhi]

This is more than just sentiment; it is a spiritual lesson. The heart cannot exist in a vacuum. To love Nigeria, to prioritize its future, and to work for its revival is a direct expression of Islamic values. You cannot claim to love Allah if you harm or neglect the land He gave you.

Our shared suffering, the economic struggles, insecurity, and loss of trust, reflects a deeper spiritual crisis. The Qur’an states a powerful truth. Allah says:

"Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves." [Qur’an, 13:11]

We have fallen into the trap of seeking help from outside while nurturing problems that destroy nations: greed, selfishness, distrust, apathy, and the urge to survive alone.

A nation is just the sum of its people. If we act dishonestly in small ways, our leaders will reflect that. Changing Nigeria doesn’t start at Eagle Square in Abuja; it starts in your own heart.

Do not forget! Nigeria is a trust from Allah. Every resource, every person, every public space is a trust. Betraying your country through bribery, shortcuts, or favoritism is a betrayal of this divine responsibility.

Stop asking what Nigeria can do for you when the land is thirsty. Ask what you are contributing. And before you blame the leaders, check your own integrity at work, at home, and in your community.

Despair is a spiritual failure. Saying Nigeria cannot be saved limits Allah’s mercy and power. We must cultivate hope to resist chaos.

There is a lesson from the righteous of the past. A wise man was seen fixing a wall in a troubled city. Someone asked:

"Sheikh, why spend your time fixing a wall in a city falling apart?"

The sage replied:

"When angels look down on this city, let them see at least one person building while others tear down. I do this not for the city’s sake, but because my Lord demands righteousness from me, no matter what others do."

Dear friends! Nigeria will not be saved by changes alone. It will be saved when its people have a spiritual awakening. It needs a detachment from selfish desires for the sake of a stable society.

Remember: You are in Nigeria by divine design, not by chance. You will be questioned about what you did with the land entrusted to you. Stand up, change your heart, build your community, and prioritize your homeland.

Fellow Nigerians! The future of our nation lies in the quiet prayers of its citizens. When we sincerely pray for our country, it creates a powerful spiritual change, turning despair into hope, division into unity, and stagnation into progress.

Dear friends, look around. A nation is not just borders, roads, or politics. A nation is a living spirit, formed by the hearts of its people. Nigeria, our home, is at a crucial point. We face challenges that test our patience, economic difficulties, and divisions that threaten our togetherness. Yet, as believers, we do not lose hope. Losing hope is for the forgotten, and we belong to Al-Hayy, The Ever-Living.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:

"And your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'" [Qur’an, 40:60]

Remember, prayer is not a last resort. It is a powerful tool. It can change destinies and soften hearts.

Reflect on the wisdom of Imam Fudail Ibn Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him), who said:

"If I had one prayer guaranteed to be answered, I would pray for the leader." When asked why, he said: "If I pray for myself, I benefit alone. If I pray for the leader and he changes, then whole nations benefit."

This is a heart-softening shift. It’s easy to complain and curse leaders. But anger causes chaos; prayer brings healing. Our leaders are human and carry heavy burdens. When we pray for their guidance, we invest in our own safety, our economy, and our children’s future.

We are a diverse nation, a beautiful mix of cultures and tribes. But diversity without unity leads to division. Allah commands us:

"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided." [Qur’an, 3:103]

Progress cannot occur in a divided house. Our growth depends on empathy. We must pray that Allah cleanses our hearts from tribalism and hatred, replacing them with love for our neighbors and patriotism.

Peace and economic growth go hand in hand. Without peace, businesses struggle, farmers can’t harvest, and children can’t learn. We must ask Allah for safety in every state, from the rivers to the plains. We need His blessings to turn our resources into shared wealth.

Raise your hands, clear your minds, and let your hearts cry out to the Lord with certainty.

Ya Allah, Lord of the Heavens! We come to You today, recognizing our faults, but trusting in Your mercy. We ask for lasting peace for our nation, Nigeria.

Ya Allah, Protector of the Weak! Heal our land from insecurity and violence. Make every part of Nigeria a safe place for our young to dream and our elders to rest.

Ya Allah, Guide of the Lost! We bring our leaders before You. Touch the hearts of our President, Governors, Lawmakers, and Traditional Leaders. Grant them wisdom and a deep fear of You. Let them see leadership as a heavy trust for which they will answer on Judgment Day. Lead them to policies that help the poor and promote justice.

Ya Allah, Creator of Diversity! Unite our hearts as Nigerians. Cleanse us of tribalism and hatred. Bind us together with respect and common purpose. Let our diversity be our strength.

Ya Allah, The Provider! Open doors of sustenance for struggling families. Bless our farmers, workers, and youth. Let our economy grow through honest means. Free us from hardship and grant blessings in our resources.

Ya Allah! Uplift our youth. Give them patience and creativity to build a better future.

Ya Allah! Do not punish us for the sins of the corrupt among us, but forgive us, fix our condition, and ease our hardships.

Dear friends! Wallahi, change doesn’t start at the presidential villa; it starts with each of us.

If we want an honest country, we must be honest in our dealings. If we want peace, we must stop spreading negativity on social media. Use this prayer not just as words, but as a guide for personal change.

Finally, may Allah heal Nigeria, purify our leaders, bless all citizens with prosperity, and make our love for righteousness greater than our fear of tyranny. Amin!

All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our noble Messenger, Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and his true followers.
