The Nigerian Army has started an investigation into a sexual abuse claim against a serving officer, Etim Essien. He is currently based at the Headquarters of 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.

The division’s spokesperson, Olumide Olukoya, shared this information in a statement on Friday.

Captain Olukoya said the army treats allegations of sexual abuse seriously. This is especially true for cases involving minors and vulnerable individuals.

He did not provide details about the victim's age.

"Accordingly, appropriate steps have been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident," he stated.

Captain Olukoya warned against making conclusions about the officer’s guilt while the investigation is still ongoing. He said it would be wrong to make definite comments at this time.

He emphasized the army's commitment to due process, fairness, and protecting the rights and dignity of everyone involved.

The spokesperson called on the public to avoid speculation and sharing unverified information that could harm the investigation.

He also asked the public to take care not to compromise the privacy and wellbeing of those involved, especially any minors.

Captain Olukoya said more information will be shared when appropriate, in line with legal requirements and the integrity of the investigation.
