Nigerian Army troops have rescued a kidnapped officer, Lt.-Col. Ofor Amobi, and a civilian, Mr. Ikechukwu Onwuanra, after a 10-day search operation in Enugu State.
The military shared this in a report released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.
The rescue happened early on Friday, thanks to the continued pressure on the kidnappers.
Troops from Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, including personnel from the 82 Division Garrison, 103 Battalion (Reinforced), the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, and the 197 Special Forces Battalion, led the operation.
The troops, under the Commander of the 82 Division Garrison, searched intensively in Inyi, Awlaw, and Akpugo-Eze forests and communities in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to the report, the troops received a tip-off from the Divisional Police Officer of Inyi Division around 2:00 a.m. on Friday about where the victims were being held.
They quickly set out on a patrol to the spot where the victims were found left at the edge of a forest in Inyi.
The military reported that both victims had gunshot wounds and were rescued before being taken to the 82 Division Medical Hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Preliminary questioning showed that the victims had been blindfolded, taken to an unknown location, and later left in a forest along the Enugu-Anambra border.
“The victims said their rescue was due to the constant pressure from the joint troops, which made it hard for the kidnappers to move and forced them to leave their captives,” the report said.
The military promised to release more details about the operation later.
