A Nigerian man living in Canada, Idris Olajide Oladejo, has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. This follows claims that he sexually assaulted a child at a grocery store in Toronto.

The Toronto Police Service shared two statements that PUNCH Metro got on Sunday. They said the 35-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Investigators found him to be the suspect in this case.

The police explained that the alleged assault happened on Sunday, June 21, around 7 p.m. This took place near Victoria Park Avenue and St Clair Avenue East in Toronto.

According to the statement, officers responded after getting a report about a child who was sexually assaulted while shopping with their parents.

"It is reported that the victim was at a grocery store in the area with their parents. The unknown suspect sexually assaulted the victim.

The suspect then ran away and was chased by a civilian," the statement said.

After the incident, the police shared a description of the suspect. They also asked the public for any information that could help with the investigation.

The police first described the suspect as a man thought to be about 30 years old, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt, dark Adidas shorts, and pink Crocs.

In an update on the case, the TPS confirmed that Oladejo had been arrested and charged with one count each of sexual assault and sexual interference.

"On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Idris Olajide Oladejo, 35, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

He was set to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 9:30 am in room 102.

A sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact. It includes, but is not limited to, kissing, grabbing, oral sex, and penetration," the police explained.

The police added that under Canadian law, sexual assault covers any unwanted sexual contact, including kissing, grabbing, oral sex, and penetration.

Our correspondent points out that the charges are still allegations. Oladejo is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
